I Made a …. Helen’s Closet Elliot Sweater
As soon as I saw the Elliot Sweater pattern from Helen’s Closet I knew that it was going to be for me. It has so many things about it which I just LOVE. I am sure that this will be the first of many tops I will make from this pattern.
The Pattern
The pattern is the Elliot Sweater from Helen’s Closet. It has several different views but I had my heart set on view A. The high-low split hem detail is so beautiful (and flattering) and I am a recent convert to slouchy polo necks, so this seemed the perfect pattern for me.
Printing and taping together PDF patterns can be such a pain and it often puts me off buying downloadable patterns. But as this pattern wasn’t too complicated I just about managed.
However, in future I do think I will pay to have them printed A0. Either that or I will print the master version and trace off my size onto my favourite dot and cross paper. I just can’t be coping with all those paper joins.
The Fabric
Anyway, having printed and assembled my pattern, I made a size S by the way, I went to cut my fabric.
The fabric I had decided to use was a lightweight sweater jersey that I had bought on Instagram from From the Museum Destash. I love fabric destash accounts on Instagram, they are such a good way to recycle unwanted fabric. And as someone who tries to be as environmentally conscious as possible with my sewing, I am always glad to buy fabric secondhand.
However, there is a slight downside to buying destash fabric. I didn’t quite have enough fabric for view A of the Elliot sweater! But never fear, I had a quick rethink and I combined the neckline for view C with the rest of view A to create a sort of boat neck look.
The Elliot Sweater
And here it is! I am really thrilled with how it all turned out. It was so quick to make, I couldn’t believe it. I started cutting at 8.30pm and by 10.30pm I had a jumper.
Having just got my overlocker back from servicing I was desperate to give it a test run and so I completely overlocked the jumper together. I then used my sewing machine and a zig zag stitch for the hems and turnings.
The neckline turned out much better than I could have hoped for. I wear a lot of boat neck jumpers and t-shirts as I find they really suit me. So of course I was thrilled when I tried the Elliot Sweater on and it sat so beautifully on me.
I am also really pleased with the high-low hem. It is so unbelievably flattering and it sits perfectly on my waist in spite of my petite height.
And the fabric! I want to make an entire wardrobe out of this fabric! I have been looking for some more so that I can have a long sleeved turtle neck version as well! So far I have only been able to find it in green, and although I like green, not this colour green!
Next I want to make the t-shirt version of the Elliot Sweater. Although it isn’t a vintage style, I am so in love with its relaxed fit I know I will wear it a lot as a base layer.
